  • PLUMBERS and electricians are charging up to $200 an hour and call-out rates have jumped almost 20 per cent in a year as the Rudd Government’s stimulus package creates a boom for tradespeople.
4Homeowners can now pay as much as $400 just to have a plumber walk through the door on a weekend.
Driving the surge is the fact many tradespeople are tied up building government-funded infrastructure such as school halls.
While most contractors and tradespeople are cagey about their rates, an investigation by The Daily Telegraph has found many are charging previously unheard of fees.
Master Plumbers Association of NSW general manager Paul Naylor said plumbers could charge up to $200 an hour and claim a weekend call-out fee up to $400 thanks to an employee having to be paid a minimum four hours on a Sunday.
Mr Naylor said geographical and cultural factors also meant huge variations in rates across Sydney.
For example in Cherrybrook, where there is a large Chinese population, customers often demanded a set job price, which could end in a high hourly rate.
On the North Shore and Eastern Suburbs, property and operating costs also drove up rates.
The more exorbitant charges are creating customer anger.
When one large plumbing franchise charged a customer $214.50 just to adjust a valve it sparked an avalanche of online complaints.
On the flip side, small operators who keep prices low are seeing a surge in demand.
“We’ve been pretty busy and a lot of the guys I know have been pretty busy,” said Shore Plumbing’s Ben Kerr, who is in the minority by not charging a call-out fee on his relatively low hourly rate of $70 an hour.
It’s a similar story for electricians, with a survey of more than 1000 by the National Electrical Contractors Association finding last year’s average Sydney call-out price was $81, up from $68 the year before.
The survey also revealed more than one in four Sydney electricians charge more than $100 just to walk through the door. One electrician said he could charge $150 an hour.

  • From Ben Kensington N.S.W – Came home at night to my flat to find that the whole apartment had raw sewage and water damage. The carpets were finished. It also leaked outside into the common area which had carpets to. Do I call my own plumber,or because its part of a body corporate do I arrange with the body corporate for their plumber to come in.The procedure can be quite a headache. Was the problem caused by a body corporate blockage. We definitely can’t stay in the flat until the problem which caused this to happen is repaired. Also we will require new carpets and or for the moment to get them cleaned and dryed out
